Before Atlassian Server products reached end of life in February 2024, SPIEGEL Group faced the challenge of migrating their existing Atlassian systems to the Cloud.

Together with Seibert, 500 Jira users and 800 Confluence users were successfully migrated. With a thorough cleanup phase, a test migration, and close collaboration, all concerns about the Cloud were resolved.

Relieving the internal IT team of system operations for on-prem instances was a strong argument for migrating to Atlassian Cloud. After moving Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence to the Cloud, teams can now focus fully on their core responsibilities and effectively support editorial processes.

SPIEGEL Group was evaluating Data Center and Cloud options and was in contact with various Atlassian partners. Ultimately, our extensive cloud expertise and a tailored migration plan won the team’s trust.

Detailed Migration Planning

A detailed migration plan was developed covering all apps and integrations. Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence were all scoped for migration to the Cloud.

Migration and Launch

From the decision to migrate to go-live took approximately one year. Before the actual migration began, we ran several cloud admin training sessions so the SPIEGEL team could get comfortable with the new cloud environment. Since standardized migration paths weren’t yet available for all products at that time, we developed a custom solution beginning with a thorough cleanup phase — because cleaner data means a faster, smoother migration.

Expanded Features, Fewer Concerns

SPIEGEL Group has been live on the Cloud since September 2022. “I’m now a fan of the Cloud,” reports IT Project Manager Thorben Petersen — and his team shares that positive experience. Of course, it took some time to adjust to the modern interface and new features, but the benefits became clear quickly. The unexpectedly low volume of IT support tickets showed how intuitively the Atlassian Cloud was adopted.

The initial data privacy concerns were confidently resolved through close, trust-based collaboration. Thanks to the migration, SPIEGEL Group can now reinvest IT resources in internal processes.
