Less effort with configuration, automated updates, a lot of flexibility, and innovative possibilities are the main reasons why Uelzener Insurance migrated from Server to the Atlassian Cloud. They are now successfully using Jira Software and Jira Service Management in the Cloud.

The Challenge
With Atlassian announcing the end of support for Atlassian server products in February 2024, Uelzener Insurance needed to make a decision: stay with the on-premise deloyment option, Data Center, or migrate to the Atlassian Cloud.
As of October 2025, Atlassian has announced its plan to end support for Data Center products.
As it stood, Uelzener Insurance was facing a few questions and potential challenges with their decision to migrate off of server products:
- Configuration and Maintenance Burden: Jira Server generated significant manual configuration and update work.
- Data Protection Concerns: Compliance with BaFin’s (German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority) strict data protection requirements was a major consideration for Cloud adoption.
- Employee Adoption: Ensuring employees could effectively transition and work with new tools and an unfamiliar Cloud environment was a challenge.
The Solution: Migration to the Atlassian Cloud
Uelzener Insurance chose to migrate from Jira Server to the Atlassian Cloud.
Key reasons for choosing the Atlassian Cloud included flexibility, automated updates, innovative possibilities, a better overall package, and native tools like Assets, along with improved usability in Jira Cloud.
As Marie Organiszak, Ulzener’s Jira Admin, explains, “Data Center would simply generate a lot more work for us in terms of configuration. And in the Cloud, you simply have a lot more options. Updates are pulled automatically, and what was more lucrative for us was that everything we couldn’t use before was included.”

Addressing Data Protection
Extensive analysis and workshops were conducted to address BaFin’s data protection requirements and data residency concerns.
Bettina Marquardt, Atlassian Administrator at Uelzener Insurance, explains, “What data do we actually store in the Cloud and where will the data residency be located later? [Seibert] gave us great support with this. We also had a workshop with Mr. Rosin, in which we clarified a few things once again. And that was a great preparation, where we really decided afterwards: Okay, the Cloud is safe and it’s the best product.”
Employee Training
Uelzener Insurance employees were trained using the Seibert Academy, which offered flexible access to learning content, including videos comparing Server and Cloud products.
Bettina Marquardt continues, “In the Academy, you posted a lot of videos about the difference between the Server product and the Cloud product. And here we have the advantage that colleagues can choose the right video for them - and repeat exactly the information that they need. It’s easier for them to learn from videos than having to read through everything.”

The Results
Seibert Solutions provided support as a migration partner, offering planning, guidance, and expertise, particularly in navigating data protection and BaFin compliance. As a result, Uelzener Insurance successfully migrated their instances to the Atlassian Cloud and now benefits from:
- Reduced Configuration and Maintenance Effort: Automated updates and inherent Cloud features led to less manual work for configuration.
- Increased Flexibility and Innovative Possibilities: The Cloud environment provided more options and flexibility.
- Confidence in Data Security and Compliance: Assurance that the Cloud environment met strict data protection standards, including BaFin requirements.
- Effective Employee Adaptation: Employees were well-prepared and adapted smoothly to the new Cloud-based tools and workflows.
When asked about her experience working with Seibert as a migration partner, Marie said, “For us, it was simply a success factor that we had such strong partners at our side. We’ve never done anything like this before. Our colleagues at Seibert did have this experience, which took a lot of fear away from us because we didn’t know what would happen. Simply being properly prepared, especially when it comes to data protection, BaFin, etc. These were all things that ultimately made us feel confident about the migration.”
